Severstal-metiz, a part of the Severstal Russian Steel division, received a positive review
of the results of the trial operation of a steel eight-strand hoisting rope with a metal core
according to TU 072-2008 in Surgut UBR-3 of JSC Surgutneftegas.
The rope was hung on the wells of the Yaunlor field in April 2010. The trial operation
continued until October of this year. Its main objectives were to determine the performance
characteristics of the new eight-strand hoisting rope design, to identify the service life in
comparison with other hoisting ropes and to determine the nature of wear during operation.
The results were considered positive. The Commission of the Surgut Drilling Department No. 3 noted a number of important advantages of the new design of the rope compared to the hoisting rope with a metal core according to GOST 16853-88: increased strength characteristics, greater flexibility and wear resistance, as well as better resistance to
compression when laying the lower rows of rope during winding on the drum of the drilling
winch.
"The use of an eight-strand hoisting rope with a metal core according to TU 072-2008
instead of a rope with a metal core according to GOST 16853-88 allows for increased
reliability of the hoisting system of the drilling rig," the report on the results of the trial
operation noted.
